1966 Thunderbird Convertible Custom

Construction Details

BEFORE - I built this customized '66 T-Bird some time in 1966. All things considered, given my experience and skill levels at the time, it wasn't too bad. It's been a long time, and over the years it has deteriorated a good bit.

The custom front I think may have come from a '65 or so Riviera. The rear modifications were inspired by the Chrysler Turbine car. I used AMT body putty and candy green rattle can paint.

2/13/16 - After an overnight soak in Castrol Super Clean the old paint and body putty was pretty much gone. The heavy black line was where I had originally laid out the side sculpturing. I don't plan to add it back.

2/13/16 - The windshield header and left vent frame were missing. I made molds and cast resin duplicates with Alumilite.

2/13/16 - Body work is progressing. I'm using sprue-glue putty for the larger areas. The chassis has been refurbished and new tires/wheels have been added.

2/13/16 - For the smaller areas Squadron green putty does the trick. I plan to keep the rear very close to how it was first built.

6/2/16 - First coat of primer

6/2/16 - Starting to fine tune the body work

8/19/17 - The original interior left a lot to be desired. I had a good spare interior assembly from a '64 promo, but decided not to use it.

8/19/17 - I decided to use the interior tub as a starting point to build a new custom interior with seats from my parts box.

8/19/17 - At this point another issue cropped up. The character line that runs down the center of the body side had started to get "soft" so I decided that I needed to address that to get the look I wanted.

10/7/18 - I started by adding a strip of half-round Evergreen styrene along the sides where the original character line was. I also decided to change the wheels and tires to a configuration that was more correct for the period; chrome reversed rims with baby Moon hubcaps.
